In the decades leading up to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Black South Carolinians waged an intense campaign for self-determination and equality, but the stories of their contributions were lost or forgotten in the decades since. The Columbia SC 63 – Our Story Matters initiative unearths and honors these stories through historical signage, educational tours, and a central website for use in classrooms and communities.
the challenge
As the Columbia SC 63 movement has grown its repository of artifacts and first-person stories, it has turned to Beam & Hinge to support both its online and location-specific exhibitions.
the solution
- We delivered a digital experience that propels a self-guided walking tour through downtown Columbia. Information is located both on the website and on local placards.
- We developed a decade-by-decade timeline utilizing original artifacts to tell the story of Columbia’s civil rights leaders.
- In 2024, we developed new visual branding guidelines for Columbia SC 63, reminiscent of protest and advocacy posters from the 1960s. The new brand will be unveiled soon!
Supporting Columbia SC 63 in preserving and sharing South Carolina’s Civil Rights history has been deeply rewarding. The updated branding pays homage to the movement’s legacy while energizing its educational and community-driven mission for years to come.
